Historical Background

The “Merchant” safe was manufactured in 1889 for the Perlov family of tea merchants. It stored not only money and valuables but also tea samples, which were a real treasure for merchants at the time. During a warehouse fire in 1905, the safe withstood extreme temperatures, preserving all its contents thanks to the asbestos layer.

After the revolution, the safe was confiscated and used in the State Bank. In 1998, it was discovered in a mansion on Pokrovka Street in Moscow and transferred to a private collection.
